Michigan · True take-home pay for where you actually live
Detroit’s income tax is 2.4% for residents. Michigan law sets the nonresident city rate at half the resident rate, so someone who works in the city and lives outside it is modeled at 1.2%. Both sit on top of the state tax of 4.25% after Michigan’s personal exemption. Uncheck “I live in this city” if you commute in. Leave this page entirely if you do not work or live in Detroit; the state page will not assume the city.
The city line uses gross wages. Exemptions on the city return and the nonresident allocation worksheet are not computed, so a careful city filer may owe less than this withholding-style estimate. Traditional 401(k) dollars stay in the Detroit base here even though they reduce the Michigan state base. The two lines can move differently when you change the deferral, and that is intentional.
Federal tax and FICA are unchanged by the city. A household comparing Detroit with a no-city Michigan suburb should run the compare tool with Detroit selected on one side and the state only on the other, same salary. The gap is the city rate, not a different federal bracket.

Detroit is modeled as a flat local tax: 2.4% for residents and 1.2% for nonresidents (when the rates differ). Use the live-here switch for resident versus nonresident treatment. Detroit's resident rate is 2.4%. Michigan law sets the nonresident city rate at half the resident rate, 1.2%, on income earned in the city. The estimate uses gross wages and does not apply the city's exemptions or the nonresident allocation form. Traditional 401(k) treatment can differ from federal; this model leaves deferrals in the Detroit base.
Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. This Detroit page does not invent taxes that are missing from the 2026 data files.
2.4% of wages in this model, plus Michigan state tax of 4.25% after the state exemption.
Uncheck the live-here switch. The city rate becomes 1.2%. Your suburb is not given its own tax unless you enter one.
Not in this estimate. It does lower federal tax and the Michigan state line.
