New Jersey

New Jersey paycheck calculator

New Jersey uses brackets from 1.40% to 10.8%, with a 10.8% top published rate. The estimate subtracts a $1,000 personal exemption, then applies the brackets to taxable wages. This file does not treat a local wage tax as part of the statewide stub.

A traditional 401(k) does not reduce the state wage base in this model. No state disability or paid-leave premium is modeled for employees here yet. New Jersey does not exclude employee 401(k) contributions from gross income the way the federal return does. Joint brackets differ from single brackets and are stored separately. Employer payroll taxes in some New Jersey cities are not employee withholding and are not modeled.

The example table on this page is a single filer, biweekly, with no deductions, for tax year 2026. It is an educational estimate, not an employer payroll register or a filed return. Compare another state with the same salary when an offer crosses a border.

Local tax

New Jersey does not have a local wage tax in this file. City costs show up in rent and sales tax, not as a second income-tax line on the stub.

What is not included

Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. This New Jersey page does not invent taxes that are missing from the 2026 data files.

Questions

How are New Jersey brackets structured?

brackets from 1.40% to 10.8% after a $1,000 personal exemption.

Are local wage taxes included automatically in New Jersey?

Not in this file. The statewide estimate does not invent a city rate.

Does a 401(k) change New Jersey tax?

In this model, employee deferrals stay in the state wage base. They still reduce federal income tax.
