Texas

Texas paycheck calculator

Texas does not tax wages. That sentence is true, and it is also incomplete. A $60,000 salary still owes federal income tax after the $16,100 single standard deduction, plus 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare. On a single biweekly stub with no deductions, that is a few thousand dollars of federal tax and several thousand more of FICA. The state line is $0. The bank deposit is not the gross.

There is no city income tax in this file for Austin, Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio. Property tax and sales tax are real costs of living here, and they are not on a paycheck, so this calculator does not pretend to fold them into net pay. If an employer withholds something unfamiliar, it is usually a benefit deduction, not a Texas income tax.

Use the result to compare a Texas offer with a taxed state at the same salary. The federal math is shared. The gap is the state, the local tax, and any state payroll line such as California SDI. Traditional 401(k) contributions still cut federal tax and still leave FICA untouched.

Local tax

Texas does not have a local wage tax in this file. City costs show up in rent and sales tax, not as a second income-tax line on the stub.

What is not included

Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. Property tax and sales tax in Texas are real costs of living and are intentionally off this paycheck.

Questions

Does Texas withhold state income tax?

No. The state line is zero. Federal income tax and FICA are still withheld.

Do Austin or Houston charge a local wage tax?

Not in this 2026 model. If a deduction on your stub is a city tax, it is not the Texas income tax, because there isn’t one.

Is a Texas paycheck the full salary?

No. You still pay federal tax and 7.65% FICA up to the Social Security wage base, then 1.45% Medicare after that.
